Welcome to DC Redux

It's still raining hard.
Mark now has an umbrella.
Plus an unspecified amount of work to do at home,
after his work day in the office.

I was in DC a couple summers ago. it was impossibly wet and sticky - and it never even rained. Ugh.

I sent you an email with club/run/trail info, let me know if you don't get it and I'll re-send it. There's tons of running and biking here; the weather doesn't cooperate in the winter or summer, only in the fall and spring, but you get used to it. Although moving from Denver (where it is much like NM)to VA was a SHOCK. I learned how to spell AC immediately. Rolling down the window in the car no longer sufficed. My first little household task that involved minimal movement left me drenched in sweat. I thought, What planet have I arrived at?

Hi Skoshi, Dunno waht's wrong with the email sendout, but here's some DC info. Glad to have the BF in DC, if he moves physically at all, he'll love it.

Your BF showed up on an awful first week! Mini-twisters on Wed., horrible heat all weekend. Whew.

For biking I suggest you ask bloggers DC Rainmaker or Not Born to Run. They're likely to be helpful. (I dunno much about biking.) But see: http://bikewashington.org/

For running, I suggest he show up at 7 am (arrive early, parking is hard) on Saturday at the Iwo Jima Marine statue in Arlington VA for the DC Road Runners Club (dcrrc) Saturday Long Run (SLR). That will jump start his immersion into the local running scene and the trails. http://www.dcroadrunners.org/index.asp

Next up, a 12 mile run down the Mall.

He should google these trails: DC: C&O Canal Towpath;

http://www.bikewashington.org/canal/

Capital Cresent Trail (the two trails meet at Fletchers Boathouse, plenty of parking); Rock Creek Park; Haines Point; the Mall.

VA: Mt. Vernon Trail; W&OD Trail; Custis Trail (hilly, connects DC to the west); 4-Mile Trail.

MD: Check out the MCRRC website (Montgomery County RR Club, largest in area, well organized, lots of Saturday runs, I hear).

Shoe stores with runs: Fleet Feet in Adams Morgan, Metro Run and Walk, Pacers, Gotta Run.

Racing website: http://www.runwashington.com/

Good luck!

I'm out of pocket the rest of june but if he runs around 8:20 training runs, tell him to call me 202-297-4874 cell and we'll run in July or he can tag along or lead a dcrrc 10-mile training group run with us all.

Brief update:
Mark had a nice run with the DC Road Runners. Nice, friendly group of around 50. He says he wants to do it agin, but now he's found there's so much to do, he won't be able to next weekend--he's doing a practice Tri with a Tri club there....
